Sewer Line Slope & Grade Calculator

Calculate sewer pipe slope (grade), elevation drop, flow velocity using Manning's equation, and minimum/maximum slope requirements for proper sewer design.

Formulas Used

Slope:

S (ft/ft) = Elevation Drop (ft) / Pipe Length (ft)

S (%) = S (ft/ft) × 100

S (in/ft) = S (ft/ft) × 12

Manning's Equation — Full Pipe (US Customary):

V = (1.486 / n) × R2/3 × S1/2

Q = V × A

Where: V = velocity (ft/s), n = Manning's roughness, R = hydraulic radius (ft) = D/4 for full pipe, S = slope (ft/ft), A = cross-sectional area (ft²) = π D² / 4

Partial Flow Geometry (d/D ratio):

Central angle: θ = 2 × arccos(1 − 2 × d/D)

Partial area: Ap = (D² / 8) × (θ − sin θ)

Wetted perimeter: Pp = D/2 × θ

Hydraulic radius: Rp = Ap / Pp

Manning's equation then applied with Rp and Ap

Minimum Slope for Self-Cleaning:

Smin = (Vmin × n / (1.486 × R2/3))2   where Vmin = 2.0 ft/s

Assumptions & References

  • Manning's equation is used for uniform, steady, open-channel flow conditions (US customary units: 1.486 conversion factor).
  • Full-pipe hydraulic radius for a circular pipe = D/4 (derived from A/P = (πD²/4)/(πD) = D/4).
  • Minimum self-cleaning velocity: 2.0 ft/s (per ASCE, Ten States Standards, and IPC).
  • Maximum velocity to prevent pipe erosion: 10.0 ft/s (general engineering practice).
  • Minimum slopes per IPC/UPC Table 710.1: 3″ → 0.25%, 4″ → 0.125%, 6″ → 0.10%, 8″ → 0.0625%, 10″ → 0.05%, 12″ → 0.04%.
  • Partial flow calculations use exact circular segment geometry (central angle method).
  • Manning's n values: PVC/plastic = 0.013, smooth concrete = 0.012, typical concrete = 0.015, VCP = 0.013, corrugated metal = 0.025 (ASCE Manual of Engineering Practice No. 36).
  • Flow rate conversion: 1 ft³/s = 448.831 US gallons per minute (GPM).
  • Pipe is assumed circular, straight, and flowing under gravity (no pressure flow).
